Is it legal to buy weed in Sofia? Hemp is illegal, both for medical and recreational purposes. It is classified as a class A (high-risk) drug, together with heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and MDMA. Under the Narcotic Substances and Precursors Control Act, cultivation, possession, and sale of marijuana are illegal, but farmers can grow industrial hemp with a permit from the government.
Weed is the most commonly used illegal drug in Sofia, an estimated 10% of young adults buy the plant. However, the country has strict drug laws that consider hemp to have a “high degree of risk for the public health due to the harmful effect from its abuse”.

Hemp is considered a List 1, “high-risk drug” in Bulgaria. Possession of any amount is illegal, but small amounts (such as a single joint) are considered a minor offense and subject to a fine. Buying weed in Sofia is a legal offense, subject to a fine.
Owning of large amounts is a criminal offense that can incur one to six years in jail while trafficking cannabis means you can face two to eight years in jail. There is not a set quantity that determines a “large amount”- it is determined by the street value of however much weed you’re carrying.
How and Where to buy weed in Sofia
Don’t expect to easily buy weed when you visit Sofia. Although hemp use is now usual for younger generation, it’s not as popular or prevalent as other vices like Vape, cigarettes and alcohol. The strict laws against hemp mean you can face jail time for owning even a few grams. But some people managed to buy weed in Bulgaria. However you can ask a random dude that looks like a stoner, if they’ve got weed on them. They might try to inflate the price if they think you’re clueless so be aware of that.
Eur15/gram would be a great price for weed in Sofia. However it can sometimes go as high as Eur20/gram, depending on the grade.
That said, the strains you find in Sofia aren’t nearly as good as other strains that can be found in other countries because there aren’t any exotics. Hash is a lot more common than weed so you might have to settle for that.
